MKFM Review: Kassia in Stony Stratford

Jodie Erica visits Kassia in Stony Stratford Milton Keynes to try their popular Indian tapas, here is her full review...

Kassia has been open for just over a year now and I have always heard such positive things since. They have quickly become a very well-known and loved restaurant, and I got the opportunity to see why and experience it for myself.

The restaurant is set in such an ideal location! I am a lover of Stony Stratford as you just can't beat that true historic and village feel, it's one of the best places for a spot of shopping and a latte and better yet, a wonderful lunch or dinner at Kassia to end the day.

The first steps into Kassia and I am wowed by the interior and decor, I am living for the colours and the retro touches. The restaurant gives off a plush underwater vibe, blue is one of my favourite colours so I instantly fell in love. It's super cosy and comfy.

I couldn't wait to try Kassia's signature mix of authentic Indian tapas as I had heard much about it, I also haven't tried many Indian dishes, so I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to get stuck in, try new things and expand on my foodie experiences.

After being seated, myself and my partner were given a nice explanation of how ordering works in Kassia and an idea of the different types of dishes available, the menu is extensive and has such a range of dishes, not only can you order Indian tapas, but you can also choose from many traditional curry dishes.

I love how the ordering works at Kassia, you are provided with a separate tick-box menu and a pen and are given the time and space you need to order without any hassle. This works great for anyone who may feel that pressure starting to kick in when being asked to order and need their own time to have a good look, or maybe just some time to enjoy a couple of cocktails first.

This is exactly what I did, and when myself and my partner were ready our menu slip was taken.

In the meantime, we were given a starter of folded poppadums with 4 dips. I never knew that these were gluten-free, so I was ecstatic! These tasted insanely good with the dips and were extremely addictive. We ate them all, not one crumb left.

I am a mixer with foods, so I highly recommend putting some onions on a poppadum first, then some mango chutney, then a bit of mint sauce AND then a very small dash of the chilli sauce, all together... HEAVEN.

The mixture of tingly onions, the sweetness of the mango chutney, the creamy refreshing mint sauce, topped off with that nice slight chilli sauce kick... truly wonderful. My partner said, which is absolutely true "You know the food is going to be amazing if the starter is!" and he was not wrong.

When choosing Indian tapas you get the choice of 5 dishes, so we decided to go for a nice array of gluten-free options and chose lamb tikka, sag paneer, chingri aloo, tandoori mix and tamarind chaat. It was great watching it all be presented to the table as it looked fantastically presented, looking fresh and hot.

I was pretty overwhelmed looking at all the delicious food in front of me, for two people this is more than enough, the portion sizes are great. I took a portion of each dish onto my plate and so did my partner, very smiley and excited, we got stuck in!

The lamb tikka consisted of cubes of lamb tikka stir-fried with peppers and onions, the lamb was hot, tender and earthy, it tore away perfectly and had the nicest slight kick to it.

The sag paneer was a very new dish to me but sounded unique and tasty, it consists of spinach and cheese stir-fried with ginger and garlic. Paneer is a mild Indian cottage cheese; it was actually gorgeous mixed with in with creamy spinach. I am surprised as I tend to steer clear of any cottage cheeses, but this has won me over!

The chingri aloo immediately caught our eye and was an instant contender as myself and my partner love fish. This dish contains tiger prawns cooked with potato, garlic, ginger and fenugreek. This was a very flavoursome curry dish; the potato and prawns together were such a lovely combination.

We chose the tandoori mix so we could have a taste of the different meats, the mix included sheek kebab, chicken tikka and lamb tikka combined with onions and peppers.

Each meat was so juicy and cooked perfectly, the herbs, and spices mixed with the onions and peppers made it a lovely mouth-watering dish.

The tamarind chaat is a dish with strips of chicken with garlic, ginger and tamarind. This was a gorgeous addition to my plate, I loved the strong hint of ginger and garlic, it all gels so nicely.

I ate everything so slowly because I was really enjoying the different textures and flavours of each dish, it was also so much fun experimenting and combining different dishes together, infusing the different types of foods and flavours.

We couldn't even finish it all, we were full to the brim and had plenty of leftovers! What made me super happy is that we were given tubs so we could take it home, and so, I had a delicious lunch the next day.

The staff at Kassia are smiley and friendly, we were very well looked after! We are super grateful to have been given the opportunity to finally experience Indian tapas at Kassia and I truly understand why everyone loves it so much.

Myself and my partner bumped into a friend the same evening who said that they have been to Kassia many times as it is a fantastic restaurant! The night itself was very busy with lots of tables booked full of laughing faces enjoying their time there.

Such a great evening, thanks again to Kassia, we will certainly be back and highly recommend!
