Scared pets and cost: Here's why some people in Milton Keynes aren't celebrating Bonfire Night at home this year

This follows the news that the major firework displays in Milton Keynes have been cancelled due to social distancing restrictions.

Keith Emmett and Sons' annual firework spectacular and funfair, which takes place in Campbell Park, will not be drawing crowds this year for the first time in its 42 year history.

And the towns of Newport Pagnell and Olney usually see families gather with sparklers in hand for a dazzling display, but organisers of both events have announced this won't be happening until 2021.

These cancellations have sparked discussion on social media, with residents understanding that organising the events would have been incredibly difficult due to social-distancing and the current 'rule of six' where it is illegal for groups of more than six people to gather.

After the announcements, MKFM turned to Milton Keynes residents to ask whether they will be celebrating the tradition at home instead.

It seems the majority of respondents will not be creating their own firework display with over 100 comments discussing exactly why.

Pets are a major factor, and dozens of people explained how their cats and dogs are incredibly frightened of the loud noises. Cats and dogs have a more acute sense of hearing making them more sensitive to the explosions.

"My dog shakes and cries uncontrollably every year," said one person, "so much so that I worry for his health and I'm dreading this year as more people will be doing them at home. Last year we had kids setting them off at 2am and 5am."

Some people have said they will be celebrating but on a quieter note: "Maybe some sparklers for the kids... and those no noise making ones... that way we don't terrify our own cats let alone the neighbours pets."

Sparklers seem to be a popular choice, with another local mum saying: "We have a fire pit going and maybe some sparklers for the kids but that will be it. My dogs are terrified of fireworks."

Fireworks are incredibly expensive; it is easy to spend upwards of £100 on a home display, while professional displays will cost thousands of pounds. Major displays in cities, like Keith Emmett and Sons' firework spectacular in Milton Keynes, typically cost anywhere from £10,000 to £20,000. It is not known how much the family-run business spend on their annual display, but there is no doubt it comes with a hefty price tag.

And so some families have said they will not be buying any this year: "I like watching the pretty displays, but I cannot justify paying that much money for just a couple minutes of fun."

Others believe it isn't worth the cost: "I can't believe the money people are prepared to spend on fireworks but complain they have no money or food for their children. My son never saw a firework until he was 5 and then it was at an organised display which I hated."

A few respondents went as far as saying fireworks should be banned outside of official displays for safety reasons: "I really hope people do not all have private firework displays, the first risk and health and safety pressures [it puts] on the NHS. Just stop people playing with explosives."

Although it seems the majority of respondents will not be hosting their own Bonfire Celebrations, some have shared their disappointment that displays won't be taking place: "I wish they were on as it's my son's first Christmas and Bonfire Night and he is going to miss out, bless him."
