Milton Keynes' main annual firework display and funfair cancelled due to coronavirus

It has been announced that the annual firework spectacular and large funfair at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes will not go ahead this year.

The much-anticipated event has been running for decades and draws crowds of over 100,000 people from across the city each year.

Keith Emmett and Sons, who are responsible for November's firework display and annual funfair, shared the news in a statement.

It reads: "As we’re sure you’re already aware, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has meant that it is vital to limit social contact and avoid large gatherings. For that reason, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our annual funfair & firework spectacular."

This year would have been the 42nd year that the family-run company had run the largest free firework event in Milton Keynes.

The display was set to take place the weekend after Bonfire Night, with families flocking to Campbell Park and surrounding areas to catch a glimpse of the display.

People have since shared their thoughts on the cancellation, with many saying that it is a sad but anticipated announcement. One person commented: "Tough decision to have to make but unfortunately it's the right one...bigger and stronger next year."

While another added: "Your family has always been so generous giving Milton Keynes a wonderful free display. Thank you ..here’s to next year."

This comes as today marks the first day of the 'rule of six', whereby it is illegal to gather in groups of more than six people both indoors and outdoors.
