Why choose social work at Milton Keynes City Council?

Milton Keynes City Council is one of the largest employers in the region, making a difference every day for local people. Unlike many other councils, less than 10% of our social work team is outsourced to agencies, and all our frontline managers are permanent and dedicated with no interim roles.

This stability means our social workers have far fewer cases to look after than in other places, which means they have more time to help each child and family, as well as enjoying a healthier work/life balance.

We really appreciate our social workers and the support they give to some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the city. As well as a healthier caseload, here’s some of the other benefits of working with us:

We invest in what you do

    • Such as in specialist assessments and therapeutic interventions to identify and address the root causes of the challenges families may be facing. You will have these resources at your fingertips to be able to create the best possible plans.

We value your skills – and develop them

    • Because we rely less on agencies, there are lots of opportunities for career progression at the city council. We will value your expert knowledge and skills and you can keep learning, whether that’s through formal training, clinical supervision, or the support of a friendly network of colleagues.

    We’re a great employer

    • We’re really proud of what we can offer, including a local government pension scheme considered to have one of the best employer contribution rates of 18.8%, a generous holiday allowance, and flexible working arrangements with all the technology you’d expect to be able to do your job on the move.

We have strong relationships with partners

    • Our social workers and social work assistants work very closely with Looked After Children nurses, primary mental health workers, colleagues in the Virtual School and many more supportive colleagues and partners.

Milton Keynes is a diverse place where 50% of our residents are under 35 – our population is younger than most other places. Our ambition is to ensure the children of Milton Keynes can live safely and are also encouraged and supported to achieve their goals. By joining our social work team, you can help to make this happen.

We encourage and warmly welcome applications from social workers from all disciplines such as adult social care and mental health services.

Do you know someone who works at the city council?

Some of our roles are eligible for our Children’s Services Social Worker Referral Scheme, which (subject to T&Cs) means the successful candidate and the person who referred them will get £1000 each, half on appointment and the rest a year later.

Our social workers have a wide range of resources to help them complete thorough assessments to identify the root cause of challenges faced by children and their families, then put protective plans in place to address areas of risk and need.

    Senior roles
