EXCLUSIVE: Would-be Milton Keynes Mayor suspended over 'anti-Semitic' social media posts

Ansar Hussain has been suspended from the local Labour group whilst claims are investigated.

Ansar Hussain was elected to represent the Wolverton ward in 2021. He also previously served as Wolverton's Mayor.

MKFM understands that he was due to be the new Deputy Mayor.

The Jewish Chronicle has reported that they have seen posts which show 'groundless claims and conspiracy theories about Israel', the JC reports that they have shared these with the Labour Group.

The party has taken immediate action in suspending the councillor for investigation.

MKFM reached out to the Labour for a comment, they said: “The Labour Party takes allegations of anti-semitism very seriously and Cllr Hussain has been suspended from the MK Labour Group while the party investigate the claims.”

The Jewish Chronicle has reported that posts made by Ansar included an article headlined “30 Little-Known Facts About Israel” shared by Mr Hussain on 7 November 2015.

Among this post and list of “facts” is the claim that “instead of sewing an insignia on clothing to distinguish race (like the Germans did to the Jews in WW2, Palestinian licence plates in Israel are colour coded to distinguish Jews from non-Jews”.

This material was highlighted by the Gnasher Jew investigation team, the JC reports.

On this list of “facts” is the claim that “instead of sewing an insignia on clothing to distinguish race (like the Germans did to the Jews in WW2, Palestinian licence plates in Israel are colour coded to distinguish Jews from non-Jews”.

This comparison could breach the International Holocaust Remembrance Association definition of antisemitism.

The local Conservatives are now calling on the suspended councillor to step down.

Cllr Manish Verma, Interim Leader of the Conservative Group, said: “The social media posts promoted by Labour Councillor Ansar Hussain are untrue, unforgivable and peddle anti-Semitic conspiracy theories that do nothing but encourage division and drive hatred.

"It is clear that he is not fit to represent the diverse and inclusive people of Milton Keynes. He should resign as a councillor with immediate effect.”
