'We've recycled for 28 years but given up now': Your reactions to 'pink sack' changes in Milton Keynes

Residents in Milton Keynes have taken to social media to express their frustration over changes to the 'pink sack' recycling bag collection scheme, with some saying they will stop recycling all together.

MKFM reported yesterday that the Milton Keynes Council Leader, Cllr Peter Marland, has said that he was aware of 'some problems' with the delivery of new clear sacks, which replace pink sacks for recycling.

Following our article, the full scale of the problem has been revealed by MKFM listeners.

Local resident Rachel Wilkes-Fernandes commented: "We've been recycling for 28 years but we gave up a few weeks ago. Just food waste and black sacks now."

Deborah Daw said: "I am a family of eight, I've ordered two lots now and had to resort to putting recycling into black bags instead. What is the point of recycling?"

Mel Nicholls commented: "We should still be able to collect them from somewhere. If you’re in a block of flats as I am, the neighbours just swipe them when they’re left outside."

Under new plans introduced last month, residents now have to order new sacks via the Milton Keynes Council website, rather than being able to collect them from local shops and community centres.

Some residents have commented that they have scheduled drop-offs of the new bags, but they have failed to arrive on the scheduled day. Some residents said it has taken three attempts to get a delivery of the new sacks.

Simon Clawson said: "I ordered two weeks ago and they delivered today. They did say they’d deliver on Monday, last week. It’s frustrating as I’ve got two weeks worth now. The roll is so small I’ll probably only have half of it left.  The pick up system worked much better."

But some users are praising the new delivery service, saying it works better than the old system of collecting sacks from local community centres and shops.

Oliver Bullock said: "I ordered mine on the website, got sent a reference number to my email and then they arrived on my next bin collection day and I got an email to confirm they had been delivered. I was happy, couldn’t have made it any better in my case."

And resident Rebecca Newman said: "No problem here. I ordered online and they arrived on my next collection day. If we end up using more than we are allowed then I will just buy some as I'd rather pay a few pounds for some more than send all out waste to landfill."
