Waitrose and John Lewis to axe 1,000 jobs

Parent John Lewis Partnership informed partners of the plan this morning (14/7).

Department store giant John Lewis and sister business Waitrose plan to cut around 1,000 jobs in stores, its parent company has confirmed.

Parent John Lewis Partnership informed partners of the plan on Wednesday morning.

The John Lewis Partnership has told staff it is proposing around 1,000 redundancies across its department stores and Waitrose supermarkets.

It comes after the closure of eight John Lewis stores announced back in March, in which Milton Keynes stores survived, in a bid to secure £300 million in savings by 2023.

Dame Sharon White, chair of the partnership, has moved to cut costs after the crisis accelerated the shift from bricks-and-mortar retailing to online.

The latest announcement affects roles across JLP's 34 John Lewis and 331 Waitrose stores but does not mean any further shop closures.

A John Lewis Partnership spokesperson said: “We have announced to our Partners our intention to simplify our management structures in Waitrose and John Lewis stores, which will allow us to reinvest in what matters most to our customers.”

It has not yet been confirmed if Milton Keynes stores will be affected by the redundancies.
