Helpers dig in to remove 100 tonnes of sand from ‘The Beach’.
More than 100 volunteers arrived with shovels to clear away a beach-load of sand from Milton Keynes’ shopping centre.
Charity organisers put out a call for helpers to assist with the big clear up in Centre:MK’s Middleton Hall and in return for their work, funfair and leisure experts Keith Emmett & Sons pledged to give £1000 to two local charities connected with the sand removal: The Henry Allen Trust and Al’s Pals.
The 100 tonnes of sand needed to be cleared quickly to make way for events planned for later this week, so the call for extra helpers – which included Milton Keynes Mayor James Lancaster – was an important one.
“Getting it out would take a long time for a small group of people,” said Keith Emmett III. “We could pay for sub-contractors to come in and remove it, but we would rather get the community involved because that is what we are all about – Milton Keynes is a community, and we all pull together.”
