Officials say the fire at Luton Airport car park started accidentally as a vehicle fault.

On 10th October, Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, declared a major incident after a huge blaze started at a multistorey car park at Luton Airport.

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in connection to the incident on 10 October.

It is believed the man, who has been released on bail, was arrested as a precaution.

The police investigation so far suggests the fire started accidentally due to a vehicle fault.

Around 1,500 vehicles were in the car park at the time - with up to 1,200 believed to be damaged.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said: "Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of criminal damage in connection to their investigation into a significant fire in a car park at London Luton Airport on Tuesday (10 October).

"We are carrying out a thorough and diligent investigation into all potential lines of enquiry, as should be expected after such a major event.

"The man has been released on bail while our enquiries continue."

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue say it has been determined that the vehicle that first caught fire was a diesel car.

"We would like to thank our fire colleagues from Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, London Luton Airport and London Fire Brigade along with Bedfordshire Police and East of England Ambulance for their support," a spokesperson for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said.

"This was a major incident with many challenges but the incredible partnership working and multi-agency response demonstrated helped to ensure that everyone was quickly and safely evacuated from the scene, and that the damage caused by the fire were kept to a minimum."
