Tories and Labour clash over Milton Keynes nuclear waste storage site claims

The Tory MP for Milton Keynes North and the Labour Leader of Milton Keynes City Council clashed over claims that Milton Keynes is being considered for the storage of nuclear waste.

The Leader of the Milton Keynes Labour Party has responded to calls from the Conservative MP for Milton Keynes North to make a full public apology after being "caught out" in a nuclear scaremongering scandal.

Yesterday, The Labour candidate for Milton Keynes North and the Leader of Milton Keynes City Council called on the government to 'stop plans to dump nuclear waste in Milton Keynes'.

They stated that Nuclear Waste Services, the body responsible for managing the nuclear waste generated from UK power stations, had contacted Milton Keynes Council about an “interested party” who are looking to use a site on the North of the city.

Labour also launched a petition to express local opposition to the plans, which the party said would be sent to Claire Coutinho, the Secretary of State responsible for this area.

Now the city’s local MP Ben Everitt is demanding a full public apology from both the Labour leader Pete Marland and Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Milton Keynes North for their "needless scaremongering", stating that these plans were false.

Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, said: “There are no plans to store nuclear waste in MK and there never will be. It just won't happen. MK has never been considered as a site for this.

“The Labour Party should be ashamed of their behaviour, but once again they have put politics before people.

“Quite simply the Labour leader of MK Council and his desperate parliamentary candidate for MK North should make a full public apology for this pathetic, shameful, scaremongering.”

The Leader of the City Council has responded to the calls stating that he sees "no need to apologise" for calling out the plans.

Councillor Peter Marland told MKFM: “I see no need to apologise for calling out this useless government on their lunatic plans.

"You’d think Ben would have learnt his lesson on calling out the council and calling us liars after the humiliating way he handled the asylum hotel shambles. Just like in the summer I’d be happy to share the emails with him that this was under consideration.

"The Nuclear Waste Services Authority has been in contact with Milton Keynes City Council and held a meeting with council officers where they were clear a site in the North of Milton Keynes is being evaluated for nuclear waste storage. The council has given feedback but we have been warned that the decision on choosing a site is for the government who can overrule local opinion on national infrastructure.

"We all know this plan is madness and it shows just out of touch the government is wasting time and taxpayer money.

"I’m pleased he agrees with Labour this plan is bonkers and will be happy to see it buried, unlike the nuclear waste his party was threatening MK with.”
