Schools across Milton Keynes affected as strike action takes place

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) in Milton Keynes, and across England, are striking today (Tuesday 2 May).

Today marks the fifth day of strike action for teachers so far in 2023 as members of the National Education Union demand improved pay and working conditions.

So far this year, strike days have seen more than half of England's 22,000 schools have closed or been partially closed.

Head teachers make the decision as to whether a school should be shut on a strike day and some parents may only know about a closure on the morning itself, depending on staff numbers that day.

Schools across Milton Keynes have been affected, with the closures or partial closures being decided by the individual schools.

Schools are set to return to normal operations tomorrow.

    Why are teachers striking?

The BBC has reported that teachers in classrooms across England were paid an average of £38,982 in the 2021/22 school, compared with £39,009 in Wales and £40,026 in Scotland.

An average head teacher's salary during the same period in England was £74,095.

Unions want above-inflation increases, plus extra money to ensure any pay rises do not come from schools' existing budgets, the BBC says.

In 2022, state school teachers in England received a 5% rise and the independent pay review body has recommended a 3% rise from this September.

However, teachers' salaries in England fell by an average of 11% between 2010 and 2022, the Institute for Fiscal Studies says.

Unions claim pay has fallen by as much as 23% in that time.

Following strikes earlier this year in February, the government made a pay offer including a £1,000 one-off payment and a 4.3% pay rise from the new school year in September.

Despite the Department for Education describing it as a "fair and reasonable offer", all four unions involved rejected it, saying  it was still not fully funded, meaning schools would have had to make cuts elsewhere to afford it.
