Residents of a Milton Keynes town are rallying together in a bid to get a mural of the MK-born England Womens captain restored.

Following the Lionesses 2-1 victory against eight-time champions Germany during the Women's Euros in 2022, England captain and Milton Keynes-born Leah Williamson was recognised with a brand new mural in her hometown of Newport Pagnell.

The Lionesses win back in August 2022 created history with the first major tournament title win for an England team since 1966.

The mural, created by MurWalls, featured Leah Williamson and a lion, along with the England flag and made national news and residents hoped it would encourage girls to get into football as well as continue Williamson's legacy.

Earlier this month, residents were shocked and 'confused' to notice one of the images had been whitewashed by someone in a bid to "tidy it up" and a GoFundMe has now been launched in hopes of getting it restored.

If enough money is raised, the fundraiser will pay for MrMeaner and Gnasher, the artists, to redo half the artwork that was whitewashed, the GoFundMe says.

"Not only was this a work of local pride, but also national, especially highlighting womens sport in the football arena. Art should never be covered over and disregarded in such a way," the page says.

"If there is any chance we can raise the money needed, it will mean a lot to the community."

If the donations exceed the target, the proceeds are set to go towards local art projects.

Cllr Scott Humphries has shared the GoFundMe on social media stating that the artwork is of 'national significance', and something Newport Pagnell is 'VERY' proud of.
