The local police force has released a statement following reports of anti-social behaviour.

The recreation ground, that can be found in the market town of Olney, has become a popular place for visitors during the summer season. The green space is maintained by Olney Town Council.

As the UK experienced the hottest days on record earlier this week, residents were left angry with visitor's litter, inconsiderate parking and anti-social behaviour.

The behaviour led to the town's mayor calling an extraordinary meeting, to approve proposals in order to deal with the problem.

Today (23/7), the local police force has taken to social media to remind those visiting the site that the area is covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order.

This means that alcohol and the use of BBQ's is actually banned in the area.

Visitors are now being warned that they could be issued a £100 fine for not following these rules.

Thames Valley Police released a statement on social media. A spokesperson wrote: 'Unfortunately we have received reports of ASB at Olney REC, this includes, large amounts of Nitrous Oxide cannisters being discarded, smashed glass, litter, the use of BBQ's and drinking alcohol.

'For those who are not aware, this area is covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) which bans the consumption of alcohol and the use of BBQ's. Anyone found to be breaching the PSPO will be required to extinguish their BBQ and dispose of alcohol, Officers can confiscate the alcohol and issue £100 fine should these requirements not be adhered to.

'Olney REC is a beautiful public facility and we would like it to be enjoyed by all however this must be done lawfully, respectfully and safely.

'Please take particular care when spending time near open water, even in warm weather water can be cold enough to cause cold water shock, there are hidden risks such as reeds, soft mud or rubbish. Swimming in open water is discouraged.

'The fields are particularly dry at the moment following the recent hot spell, with increased risk of field fires, the use of BBQ's only adds to this risk.

'Please don't prevent others from enjoying this facility or increase demand on our emergency services by reckless and inconsiderate behaviour.'
