Residents of Olney left devastated after heatwave brings 'inconsiderate' crowds to recreation ground

Residents have been left angry over 'appalling behaviour' that took place in a Milton Keynes town during record breaking temperatures.

Hundreds of people have been gathering at Olney Recreation Ground as temperatures soared across the country, but residents say the crowds brought litter, inconsiderate parking and anti-social behaviour.

Following concerns raised by residents, the Mayor of Olney has called an extraordinary meeting to approve proposals in order to deal with the problem. The full letter from the mayor can be found at the bottom of the story.

MKFM reported earlier this week that fire crew were delayed due to parked cars in the town.

Sharing an image on Facebook, a spokesperson for the fire station said: "The Olney crew have just been delayed mobilising to an incident to move cars so that they could get out."

"This delays response to people in need. Please leave enough space for emergency vehicles to get through."

The letter from the Mayor reads: 'Dear Residents, I am writing to you regarding the appalling behaviour we have seen on and around the recreation ground.

'Firstly, I would like to apologise. I am sorry that this is happening again, and I am sorry that nothing seems to be getting better. I have received numerous emails and calls and had conversations with many of you. It is genuinely devastating to hear how the problems of inconsiderate parking, littering and anti-social behaviour are impacting you.

'It is not acceptable; and we are going to do something about it.

'I have called an extraordinary meeting for 7pm Tuesday 26th July at the Olney Centre. The purpose of this meeting is not to simply discuss the problem, but to approve proposals to deal with the problem. Nothing is off the table, and we are serious about tackling it.

'If you have any suggestions, please get in touch with myself, the office, or other councilors, our contact details are avallable on our website. I have seen on social media various people calling the Town Council 'toothless' and 'useless'.

'This is exactly how we feel. We do not have powers to issue fines or administer parking enforcement. We will continue to ask for more help from partners including Thames Valley Police and Milton Keynes Council.

'Finally, I would like to thank the council staff, councillors and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to improve the situation. Whether that is litter picking, challenging anti-social behaviour or collecting evidence, it is very much appreciated. I look forward to hearing more from residents and working together as a town to tackle the problem.'
