Petition to save The Point in Milton Keynes reaches close to 4,000 signatures

Currently, at the time of writing (21/01) the online petition sits at 3,843 unique signatures in defence of the entertainment complex.

The Point initially opened in 1985 and has often been praised as an iconic local landmark for its unique eye-catching design. It was the UK’s first multiplex cinema and at the height of its popularity also housed a games arcade, nightclub and a bingo hall. As the site has stood for over 30 years, it is no surprise that lots of people in Milton Keynes have fond lifelong memories attached with the Point, earning it a sense of cultural significance in the area.

However, in 2012, the building’s owners Hammerson put forward a proposal to demolish the building which was later approved by the Milton Keynes council. Many local residents were disgruntled with this decision and rushed to defend the building from being knocked down. An online petition was launched, which has recently worked its way up to almost 4,000 signatures.

On Twitter, local musician Regan Vincenza noted the importance of the building as she stated: “[The Point] is an architecturally significant building. A unique design of the time, and an icon of Milton Keynes.”

Despite being popular with numerous Milton Keynes citizens, the Point controversially had its application denied to become a grade II listed building on the grounds that the structure lacked any architectural merit.

Many campaigners have been proposing to leave the building as it stands and instead convert the interior to a new shopping mall which would also include restaurants and leisure facilities. One local, named Phil Harris, posted on Facebook: “It should be revived. Same outer structure but with independent retailers inside.”

Another Facebook user, Susan Mcclarence, agreed as she said: “[The Point] needs totally restoring, but the structure should remain with lots of independent shops and cafes.”

Although planning permission has been given for the demolition of the Point to take place, no exact date has been agreed upon. As there have still been no significant developments in recent year, this is leaving some campaigners hopeful that it is not too late to save the building.

As it stands today, the Point is still scheduled for demolition but there haven't been any significant recent developments. If you wish to sign the petition, click here and add your name to the list!
