Milton Keynes Food Bank receives donation of over 200 parcels from local mosque

Last month, a local mosque got in touch with Milton Keynes Food Bank offering to support Muslim families with dietary requirements as part of their Ramadan commitments.

MK Food Bank provides emergency food parcels to families and individuals across Milton Keynes who have hit a short term crisis. Between January and March 2023, the Food Bank saw an increased demand of 49% on the same period last year.

The community from Zainabaya Islamic Centre at Granby Mosque brought and packed over 200 parcels, roughly around 4,000 food items.

The items, which are suitable for a Muslim diet, include lentils, chicken sausages, spinach and basmati rice replacing food parcel staples of soup, pork and long grain rice.

With the donation, Milton Keynes Food Bank are able to diversify and make parcels more widely available to anyone who needs their service.

The parcels are now available on request from MK Food Bank's 11 Serving Centres across Milton Keynes for anyone who would prefer this food.

In the last few months, as well as an increase to demand, the Food Bank has also had to deal with the cost of food rising.

Despite seeing over 2,700 Food Parcels going out in MK alone during the month of March, the charity is only receiving around half of what it needs to deliver, leading them to spend over £20k per month to make up the shortfall.
