MKFM CEO Darren Dorrington has announced he is set to leave his role with the radio station this December

Darren, who has been with MKFM for the past twelve years, is leaving following major growth in the business

MKFM looks back at some of Darren’s key achievements which granted Milton Keynes its very own local radio station and continued support for our community.

His work with the station saw him launch the radio station on DAB Digital Radio in 2013 at the time when no FM licenses were available. At the time it was virtually unheard of a small radio station launching on DAB. Darren personally funded the initial launch as it seemed inconceivable that Milton Keynes was left without a local radio station.

Following a successful campaign to bring local radio back to FM in Milton Keynes, Darren secured a debate in Parliament with local MP Iain Stewart on community radio licensing which eventually assisted MKFM obtain a full time FM license during 2015.

Towards the end of 2016, Darren relaunched MKFM.com which paved the way for local businesses and charities to promote themselves to a wider audience. The new website included a business directory and events guide where users could upload their own details.

During 2019 he secured a deal with Stadium MK to provide the station with back office support and further investment.

In 2020, the station became the first media outlet to interview Captain Sir Tom Moore and in 2022 a survey showed that the radio station was regarded as the main local radio station and news provider in the city.

Confirming his departure, Darren Dorrington said: “I’m grateful to everyone who has supported MKFM over the past twelve years. During my time with the business, MKFM has developed from an amateur radio station to an organisation that has the platforms through radio, social media and our website to deliver vital information and entertainment as well as support to our ever-growing community.”

MKFM wishes Darren, who will remain as a non-executive Director, well in his future endeavours.
