MK Dons Chairman addresses businesses at MKFM's Meet of MK

MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman joined MKFM's networking event on Thursday (28/7), to talk about business, city status and MK Dons.

On the last Thursday of every month, MKFM hosts The Meet of MK at Marco's New York Italian in Central Milton Keynes.

The popular event, which was launched four years ago, allows local businesses charitable organisations, and individuals to connect in a relaxed environment. There is also the chance to have some nibbles and listen to some special guest speakers.

During last Thursday's (28/7) event, MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman attended the event, to speak to over 90 local businesses that were in attendance

The Chairman shared his delight over the successful summer Stadium MK has experienced so far, with concerts, the UEFA Women's Euros and more. "It is lovely to see everybody again and get that spirit back," he said.

"You have a dream, and here is a place where you can make it real. We have proved that over the past few weeks with the fantastic concerts, World's Strongest Man and of course the Euros which has just been an amazing journey over the past few weeks."

This summer has seen My Chemical Romance and Imagine Dragons take to Stadium MK.

When speaking about Milton Keynes being front and centre with recent national events, Pete Winkelman said: "I think as a city we are quite good at this and that says a lot about you guys and how welcoming we are, making people feel at ease."

In terms of MK Dons, the Chairman has high hopes for the team. He said: "I'm excited about what the season could bring and I still believe we could go and get promoted to the Championship, I think that's totally within out power.

"But there has to be a plan one day of how we hit the Premier League, because for me, Milton Keynes is a Premier League city.

"and isn't city a great word."

As part of the Queen's Jubilee this year, Milton Keynes was finally awarded city status after numerous attempts. The push for MK to be crowned a city received a wealth of public support from residents, with hundreds submitting photographs of their favourite local places and using social media to shout about how ‘MK was built to be a city’. As well as this, key figures of Milton Keynes, including MK Dons Chairman himself, helped hugely with the process.

"We have become a real city. I can't believe how many times I have talked about the new city of Milton Keynes and people would correct me, well of course now we really are," he said.

"It really does show a coming of age, of our place, there's now generations of people being born in Milton Keynes which is why it is very important for me that we become successful."
