Political groups disagree over potential £140k funding for flood defence in Milton Keynes estate

Labour and the Conservatives have disagreed about the Conservatives' calls for extra flood protection in a local estate.

The Conservative Group had been campaigning for Milton Keynes Council to allocate £140,000 funding in this year's council budget to improve flood defence in Loughton, particularly on London Road.

A few properties on London Road have been impacted by flooding in the past few months.

In a video posted on Facebook on 22nd February, Conservative Councillor candidate for Loughton, Ethan Wilkinson, said that the recent flooding on London Road "has been a huge concern" - something which Labour councillors disagree with.

And last week, councillors virtually met to set out Milton Keynes Council's budget for 2021/22, where £15,000 was awarded for flood wardens in Milton Keynes.

During the meeting, the Leader of Milton Keynes Council Cllr Pete Marland called for the Conservatives to withdraw the £140,000 budget amendment.

Cllr Marland said: "On flooding, the London Road amendment is shocking, to a level of disregard.

"Three properties and one cellar have been flooded and the risk of flooding in that area registered by the Environment Agency is low.

"Telling people on Facebook and through posted letters that they live in a flooded area or an at risk of flooding area is completely and utterly irresponsible.

"This amendment should be withdrawn and the Conservative candidate in that ward should withdraw the remarks for the benefit of the people of London Road."

The current Labour Councillor for Loughton, Zoe Nolan, also told the people of Loughton not to worry, despite the fact that some properties have been impacted by floods.

In a Facebook post, she said: "Please do not be anxious about flooding affecting your property in Loughton or your ability to sell your home if you wanted to.

"I have written to the Conservative opponent asking him to retract his implications to stop worrying residents or putting our local housing market at risk."

But the Conservatives have stood by their initial calls for extra flood protection in the area.

A spokesperson for the Conservative Group said: "We are proud of our Conservative team in Loughton. They are doing an outstanding job trying to secure investment into local flood alleviation. A project that has been considered carefully by officers.

"It’s incredibly disappointing that Cllr Nolan is actively fighting against funding for the area she represents.”
