Two tower blocks in Milton Keynes likely to be demolished and rebuilt, or completely refurbished

Two tower blocks in the city will likely either be demolished and rebuilt, or completely refurbished.

This follows last month's announcement that Mellish Court in Bletchley and The Gables in Wolverton, both 60-year-old buildings, do not meet current fire safety standards that are expected to prevent the "risk of smoke and fire spreading between flats and floors".

On 1 December, Milton Keynes Council will make a formal decision to consult Mellish Court and The Gables tenants and leaseholders on the future of the two tower block buildings.

And following meetings with residents last week, the Council is considering the possible options, which will include whether to build new properties on the sites of Mellish Court and The Gables or carry out a total refurbishment, stripping the buildings back to their original structure.

Each option would include finding alternative council homes for tenants. A spokesperson says that the council has been contacting residents and encouraging them to put in applications to move and will continue to work with residents to find homes that are right for them and their families.

Milton Keynes Council's colleagues are carrying out assessments of the work needed to bring the buildings up to the modern fire safety standards now expected and will continue to listen to residents’ views ahead of deciding on the best course of action. Last month, the council implemented 24/7 wardens at both blocks as a precautionary measure.

Cllr Emily Darlington, Cabinet member responsible for Housing, said: “We’re looking at the best options for the future of Mellish Court and The Gables, which we have been discussing with residents. I’d like to thank the residents for their contributions so far, and we’ll continue to work together throughout the process.”
