Man sentenced to hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter of 'much loved wife' in Milton Keynes

Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been sentenced for manslaughter in Milton Keynes.

Michael Sargeant, aged 78, of Bradwell Road, Loughton, Milton Keynes, previously pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court to a count of manslaughter by diminished responsibility, which was accepted by the prosecution.

Returning to Luton Crown Court today (10/10), he was sentenced to a Hospital Order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983 without limitation of time.

The sentence relates to the death of Christine Sargeant, who died aged 73.

At around 8am on Saturday 20 May, officers were called to an incident in Bradwell Road, Loughton.

When officers arrived they found Christine unconscious.

She was given emergency first aid at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she later sadly passed away.

Michael Sargeant was arrested at the scene and was charged three days later on 23 May.

A Home Office post-mortem examination later established the cause of death to be a neck compression.

"Our thoughts remain with the family at this difficult time," a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said.

Officers say the family of Christine Sargeant refer to Michael Sargeant as Andy.

Following the sentencing today, the family of Christine Sargeant have released the following tribute to her: “Christine was a much loved wife, sister, aunt and great aunt. Christine and Andy were happily married for over 50 years and were well respected in their community. This tragic incident followed a period of ill health for them both.

“The family wish to thank Thames Valley Police, the prosecution and defence for their compassion, consideration and understanding during these difficult months for all involved. The family would also like to thank Christine and Andy’s many friends, colleagues, neighbours and the local community for all their best wishes and support.

“We would ask that you respect our family’s privacy at this very difficult time as we look to the future.”
