Captain Tom Foundation likely to 'close down' as family appeal spa building demolition order

The Captain Tom Foundation is 'likely to close down' following an investigation into its management, Sky News reports.

The admission about the fate of the foundation was made during a hearing following an appeal launched by the late fundraiser's family following an order to demolish a 'spa building' at their Marston Moretaine home.

The Captain Tom Moore Foundation was set up in June 2020 and is now being investigated by the Charity Commission.

Barrister Scott Stemp said during the hearing that "It's not news to anybody that the foundation, it seems, is to be closed down following an investigation by the Charity Commission."

The appeal was launched by Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband against an order by Central Bedfordshire Council to demolish a building on the grounds of their home. The plans were originally granted permission after stating that they were to build an L-shaped structure with the site being used partly "in connection with The Captain Tom Foundation".

However, they then last year submitted an application for a larger, C-shaped building with a spa pool.

The application was rejected by the council and served an enforcement to be demolished.

Chartered surveyor James Paynter, a representative for the couple, told the hearing the scheme had "evolved" to include the spa pool.

He said: "It was felt that a larger building could provide this extra space for this extra facility going forward. The spa pool has the opportunity to offer rehabilitation sessions for elderly people in the area.

"They want to offer one-to-one sessions, only on a once or twice per week basis. They felt this extra limb to create a C-shape was needed to create this facility."
