£14m A&E extension will be built at Milton Keynes Hospital to help ease pressure on services

Milton Keynes Hospital will soon welcome a £14m extension of its A&E department for patients with complex needs.

Construction company Galliford Try, which previously built the hospital's cancer centre, will soon start work on building a 26-bed Pathway Unit as part of the hospital's five-year expansion plans.

The already existing Maple Unit will be demolished and in its place will stand the Pathway Unit, with 16 assessment rooms, which aims to take the pressure off of the main A&E services.

It will provide access to primary care, community, mental health services, and social care for individuals with complex or multiple needs who attend the emergency department.

Jon Marston, Managing Director of Galliford Try Building East Midlands, said: “We are delighted that MKUH has entrusted with the construction of this new building which provides a key part of their new masterplan.

"We look forward to working with them to deliver the high-quality facilities that their patients and the people of the region deserve.”

Work is due to start shortly on the brand new Pathway Unit and is expected to be complete by August 2022.
