People in Milton Keynes could potentially face a bacon shortage 'within months'

It has been reported that we could potentially be facing a bacon shortage if the travel ban on Denmark continues.

The Government has banned all travel and manned shipments from Denmark following the news that a new and more deadly strain of coronavirus, Sars-Cov-2, has been found in mink.

Scientists fear that if the strain could deem the coronavirus vaccine ineffective, so now Denmark is to cull its entire population of 17 million mink.

They are trying to prevent any further spread of the 'cluster 5' strain from mink to humans.

And while this is dealt with, the temporary ban on travel and shipments means that no Danish vessels can dock in the UK.

This will have a knock-on effect on bacon being imported into the country, with one-quarter of our pork products currently coming from Denmark. Bacon will be imported via unmanned shipments for the time being.

The Sun reports that Rod McKenzie, MD of policy at the Road Haulage Association said the restrictions were "significant and unique.”

And he warned that if the restrictions continue there could be "a potential disruption to bacon supplies in the UK."

But Logistics UK, a freight trade body, said that "importers can switch between transport modes to ensure that products still arrive".

Let's hope there isn't a shortage, as we need our fry up staple! In the mean time, why not shop local and buy from a Milton Keynes-based butcher?
