IKEA set to launch 'spare parts’ service in Bletchley store

The Swedish Milton Keynes furniture store is to start offering spare parts in an attempt to become more sustainable.

The plan, which is currently in early stages and do not currently have a launch date, would allow customers to fix broken furniture items, as well as update old furniture with new covers and new table legs without the need to purchase a new product.

IKEA's chief sustainability officer said to the Financial Times they are testing various products for the part selling, and that the company suspects the plan’s impact on new furniture sales would be “limited”.

Back in October, the company announced that they would have a 'buy-back' scheme for old furniture.

They also announced they had achieved their 2020 target by sourcing more than 98 per cent of its wood from recycling or responsibly managed forests.

IKEA was one of the first retailers to sell only LED lightbulbs, and have recently started selling a plant-based version of its famous meatballs that has only 4% of the climate footprint of its pork and beef ones.

The Bletchley IKEA store currently remains closed during lockdown but still operating a click and collect and delivery service.
