MKFM Review: Hairspray The Musical at MK Theatre

Charlotte from the news team returned to MK Theatre last night to watch Hairspray The Musical and here is her review...

I was super excited to catch Hairspray at MK Theatre!

For those who have not been lucky enough to catch the film, Hairspray tells the story of young Tracy Turnblad. Tracy has dreams of appearing on a hit TV show and after quickly becoming friends with a guy called Seaweed, Tracy protests to see integrated television. Along the way she finds love whilst helping her mum to discover self-love.

With an iconic soundtrack, witty script and powerful message, this production really did the story justice.

Personally, I have always loved the film due to it's fun-filled music and vocals, the cast really pulled out all the stops and smashed the vocals out the park.

Every single member of the cast in last night's show had an unbelievable voice.

You would never had known Tracy Turnblad was Katie Brace's professional stage debut. That role is made for her! Every song was performed with so much passion and fun, she looked like she was having the time of her life whilst on stage and that really projected onto the audience.

Another standout performer was Brenda Edwards as Motormouth Maybelle, anybody who has seen the films would know just how important this character is. Brenda's voice is filled with so much soul, she made me tear up! Brenda was the perfect casting for Motormouth Maybelle and she really hit the nail on the head.

My personal favourites of the show had to be Tracy's parents Alex Bourne (Edna Turnblad) and Paul Hutton (Wilbur Turnblad). Their chemistry was just brilliant. Everything worked, the height difference, their voices and the pure comedy of their relationship.

The show was bursting with feel good music and soulful vocals which kept the audience swaying in their seats.

Hairspray the Musical is at MK Theatre for the rest of this week, you can find out more here
