DonDeal: Leko continues Milton Keynes Dons journey

MK Dons are pleased to share that winger Jonathan Leko has signed a new deal to stay at Stadium MK.

'Leks' signed for the Dons in 2022 and has since made 55 appearances for the MK1 side.

Amassing 12 goal contributions for the club across League One, League Two and the EFL Trophy, the former Birmingham City midfielder has featured for the likes of Mark Jackson, Graham Alexander, Mike Williamson and Paul Warne in an MK Dons shirt.

Pacy and direct as a footballer, Leko is the kind of player who makes you sit up and take notice, with several memorable moments in an MK Dons shirt already, most notably a brace against Wrexham on the first day of the 2023/24 season.

A popular character in the dressing room thanks to his beaming smile and sense of humour, Leko endured a difficult 2024 after suffering a serious injury while on loan at Burton Albion.

Jonathan has worked extremely hard over the last 12 months to regain his fitness, and with the help of the MK Dons medical department, he played for the club for the first time in over a year as part of a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham in March.

Following the appointment of Paul Warne last season, Leko stood out immediately as a player the new Head Coach wanted to work with, playing in all four of Warne's games in charge so far.

A popular player at MK Dons, everyone at the club would like to congratulate Jonathan on his new deal.

On signing a new deal at Stadium MK, Jonathan Leko said:

"I'm absolutely buzzing to have signed a new deal with the Dons. Everyone knows how much I love the club and how grateful I am for everything they've done for me over the last few years.

"Now it's all about the new season, I want to show the supporters what I'm all about and be the best version of myself possible.

"I'd like to thank the medical team for being so patient with me last year. This is going to be such a good season, and I can't wait to get going."

On having Leko in his squad for the new season, Head Coach Paul Warne said:

"The first thing you notice about Jonathan is what a wonderful person he is. He's full of personality and character, and above all else, he just loves football.

"The second thing you notice is just what a talented player he is. He's done things on the training pitch you just wouldn't believe. At his best, he’s absolutely unplayable.

"This is a big year for Leks, and it's up to me, Richie (Barker) and Darren (Potter) to get the best out of him. He’s a competitor, he’ll have to train at his best to get into the team, but I’m sure he will, and that's why I’m thrilled he’s staying."

On the continuation of Leko's contract with MK Dons, Sporting Director Liam Sweeting said:

"We all know just what Leks is capable of, and under Paul's leadership, this feels like the perfect time for him to showcase it.

"It's clear Leks and Paul have formed a really good relationship, and this next period is all about us maximising his significant talent.

"It's also worth a nod to our medical and sports science team for the fantastic work they did with Leko last year, and I'm so pleased we can all capitalise on that hard work together this season."
