Women and girls in Milton Keynes able to access free presentations on online safety

Women and girls in Milton Keynes can access free online presentations on a variety of topics, one of them being online safety.

Thames Valley Police’s South East Cyber Team is delivering presentations online for women and girls to educate them on the steps to take to stay safe online.

Research conducted in 2022 by Girlguiding, a charity that empowers girls to find their voice, revealed that over three-quarters (75%) of girls and young women between the ages of 13 and 21 had come across harmful content online in the previous year, such as harassment, cyberflashing, and sexist remarks. As a result, people are experiencing anxiety, fear, and a plummet in confidence.

Rachel, 19, from Milton Keynes told MKFM, “I wish there was more support and guidance on online safety when I was younger. It would have helped me avoid a lot of situations that I didn’t want to be in. Even to this day, I still have trust issues when connecting with people online, I am so sceptical of things because I learnt the hard way, unfortunately like many of my friends and age mates.”

The information shared in the presentations by the Cyber Team is essential for girls and women to feel safe and stay safe online. The sessions are not overly technical and aim to provide girls and women with all the things needed to know how to keep themselves resilient to online threats and worrying behaviours.

The Cyber team is currently offering three online presentations; today, Wednesday, August 28, Wednesday, September 18, and Monday, October 28. All the presentations are set to begin at 6pm.
