When the 'smart motorway' roadworks will end on the M1 in Milton Keynes

Highways England have set out when the smart motorway roadworks on the M1 in Milton Keynes will draw to a conclusion.

It comes as the temporary barrier near Junction 13 has been replaced this week with traffic cones so that road workers can start re-surfacing and putting in the white lines for lane changes.

Junction 13 itself at Bedford/Milton Keynes South is set to open for 'all lane running' in March 2021.

But it will be a lot longer before the rest of the road between Junction 13 and 16 is back to normal.

Highways England have said the full smart motorway works between Bedford, Milton Keynes and Northampton will conclude in either 2022 or 2023.

The huge amount of work still to do involves converting the motorway between junctions 13 to 16 into four lanes of traffic with no hard shoulder.

In addition, there are new emergency areas, new roadside phones, safety barriers and CCTV to install.

There will also be the planting of trees and bushes to replace any removed during construction.
