People across Milton Keynes are urged to take inspiration from England women’s outstanding achievements in winning the UEFA Women's EURO 2025.
The team’s official homecoming took place yesterday with an open-top bus parade and a celebration outside Buckingham Palace.
Coincidentally, MK City Council also signed off its latest Council Sports Strategy (2025/2030) yesterday.
"On behalf of Milton Keynes, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the England Women’s football team on their fantastic achievement winning the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 and, of course, to our local champion Leah Williamson in particular,” said Councillor David Hopkins, former Leader of the Conservative Group at MK City Council and Mayor of Woburn Sands.
“These talented athletes have not only achieved great things on the pitch but have also become role models for our communities. Their performances show what can be achieved with skill, effort and teamwork.
Cllr Hopkins continued: “The greatest tribute to celebrate the legacy of this success that we offer locally is to literally up our game by providing far more open space and sports pitches across the expanding parts of MK by including that requirement in the soon to be adopted MK Local Plan, MK2050.
"Previous local plans have promised much and delivered far too little, we have to hold developers to their commitments and meet the need for sports pitches in particular, as currently demand in MK far outstrips supply of such pitches”.
“We need to seed funds through grants and professional support from our colleagues at town and parish level who are best placed to identify and support grass roots sports within their communities.
“For residents, taking on a new challenge boosts our mood and keeps us fitter, healthier and happier, so if we want as a council to generate further inspiration then we need to clearly publicise what is available and take on board the demands of the residents we represent.
"There should be something suitable for all ages and abilities,” Cllr Hopkins added.
