'We need a general election' says leader of Milton Keynes City Council

    The Leader of Milton Keynes City Council has called for a General Election as Liz Truss announces her resignation as Prime Minister.

    Liz Truss addressed the media today to announce her resignation as Prime Minister after 44 days in office.

    She said that she was elected "with a mandate to change" and that she recognises she "cannot deliver the mandate" on which she was elected.

    It was announced that there will be a leadership election completed in the next week.

    Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, Labour Councillor Peter Marland, is now calling for a general election.

    "Britain needs stability," The Council Leader tweeted.

    "Britain needs a grown-up government and Keir Starmer is the right person in the right place, and now we need a General Election so we can make it his time."

    Sky News report that Sunak is now favourite to be new PM. It comes after he lost the previous race to Liz Truss.

    In her statement read outside Downing Street, Liz Truss said: "I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability.

    "Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills."

    " I recognise, though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

    "I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.

    "This morning, I met the chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady. We've agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week."
