The Milton Keynes branch of the RSPCA has issued an update, advising it can no longer provide the same level of support to pet owners as increasing costs continue to impact its operation.
In a statement, they said: 'Our branch exists to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. In the past, we have also offered limited financial assistance and neutering vouchers when funds allowed. These schemes were never government funded and relied entirely on donations.
'Sadly, rising costs mean we can no longer provide the same level of financial support as before. The funds used for vouchers come from the same donations that pay for food, veterinary care, and shelter for the animals already in our care. As a small local branch, we cannot stretch these resources any further without putting those animals at risk.
'Our priority must always be the animals already relying on us, many of whom have come from neglect, abandonment, or cruelty,' the charity said, while admitting, 'This has been a very difficult decision, and we understand it may be disappointing for some.
'These schemes were designed to support responsible ownership, not to enable people already struggling financially to take on more animals. Unfortunately, misuse of support places unsustainable pressure on limited resources.
'There is no NHS for pets. Veterinary care is not free, and owning an animal comes with ongoing financial responsibility. Pet insurance is strongly recommended to help manage unexpected costs.'
The RSPCA reiterated the importance of considering adoption when thinking of welcoming a new pet into your home.
By doing that, you give an animal a second chance at a happy life, and the adoption fee you pay includes neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations, giving animals the best possible start.
