Police and Trading Standards have issued a warning to householders in Milton Keynes following a recent incident where an 85 year old resident was deceived into unnecessary roof repairs.
Officers attended a report involving doorstep traders who initially claimed that a few loose tiles required minor work.
The price was presented as low and reasonable, but once on the roof, the traders alleged further problems and dramatically increased the cost, charging thousands of pounds for a full roof replacement.
But in reality, only a small number of tiles needed replacing on the bletchley property.
Residents are urged not to engage with unsolicited doorstep callers and to avoid agreeing to any work on the spot. Instead, seek at least three independent quotations from reputable traders before authorising repairs.
If you are approached by doorstep sellers, the advice is to ask them to leave immediately, do not be pressured into agreeing to work, and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
