Tributes have been paid to the former Mayor of Newport Pagnell, Annette Irwin, who has died age 84.

Northern Irish-born Annette Irwin moved from London to Newport Pagnell in the 1970s alongside her husband and two children.

Annette, a prominent local figure, served on Newport Pagnell Town Council from 1992 to 2014 and became Mayor in 1996, a role that she was incredibly passionate about.

Throughout her time on the town council, Annette launched the Milton Keynes Irish Society, which aimed to promote and support Irish cultures and communities.

And in January 2020, Annette received the Equality Council UK Gold Award in recognition of her 35 years in charitable and voluntary work across Buckinghamshire.

Annette passed away on 29th January 2021 following a "long fight" with declining health, and she will be laid to rest at Tickford Street Cemetery in Newport Pagnell.

Cllr Paul Day, Current Mayor of Newport Pagnell, said: “I was very sorry to hear about Annette’s passing. I’m sure many residents will remember her time on Newport Pagnell Town Council and the terrific contribution she made to our town.

"All of us at the council send our sincere condolences to Annette’s family and friends."

The Milton Keynes Irish Society shared a tribute on their Facebook page which reads: "We are very saddened to announce the passing of our President, Annette Irwin, of Milton Keynes and Co Leitrim.

"Annette was the founding member, backbone and driving force of the Milton Keynes Irish Society, championing the Irish culture and doing great work in the local community. She will be greatly missed by all our members and all who knew her. RIP."
