Tributes paid to Captain Sir Tom Moore who died aged 100

Tributes have come in after the war veteran from Bedfordshire passed away today.

Captain Moore walked 100 lengths of his garden in April 2020, before he celebrated his 100th birthday.

His original target was to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together. He ended up raised £32.8 million.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has led the tributes to Tom.

"Captain Sir Tom Moore was a hero in the truest sense of the word. In the dark days of the Second World War he fought for freedom and in the face of this country's deepest post war crisis he united us all, he cheered us all up, and he embodied the triumph of the human spirit.

"He became not just a national inspiration but a beacon of hope for the world. Our thoughts are with his daughter Hannah and all his family."

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has said: "Captain Tom was the very best of us. His courage, compassion, resilience, hope and generosity have been an inspiration to millions - and an example to us all. Where he walked, a nation followed."

Leader of the Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer has commented: "Captain Tom Moore put others first at a time of national crisis and was a beacon of hope for millions. Britain has lost a hero"

Her Majesty The Queen has passed on her own private message to Tom Moore's family.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson says: "The Queen is sending a private message of condolence to the family of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Cpt Sir Tom and his family at Windsor last year. Her thoughts, and those of the Royal Family, are with them, recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world."
