How to keep your pets cool in Milton Keynes this weekend as temperatures soar

Temperatures are set to soar this weekend and the RSPCA has offered advice on how to keep pets cool and comfortable.

Soaring temperatures can pose huge risks for pets, wildlife and farm animals, and with forecasters predicting temperatures over 28 degrees in Milton Keynes this weekend, many pet owners and animal lovers may be concerned about keeping animals safe during the heatwave.

Every year, the RSPCA receives hundreds of reports of animals suffering from heat exposure, including dogs left in hot cars, pets with heat burns on their paws from pavements, dehydrated wild animals after water supplies have dried up, grazing animals with no shade, and dogs over-exercised in the heat.

In a statement on their website, RSPCA advise: "Never leave animals in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans on a warm day, even if it's just for a short while. When it's 22°C outside, temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) in these environments which can be deadly.

"You can also keep your pets safe by using a pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of your pets skin, and of course, by providing plenty of access to shade and constant access to fresh water. It's also worth checking pets regularly for flystrike.

"You can also help your pets cool down by putting ice cubes in their water bowl or by providing damp towels for them to lie on."
