Thunderstorms heading for Milton Keynes today

Heavy showers, winds and lightning expected this afternoon.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Milton Keynes and the south east of England, warning of thunder, lightning, high winds and possible disruption to local travel.

Weather experts at the Met Office say there is a ‘good chance’ driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

The office adds that it’s likely there will be some damage to buildings and structures from strong winds and lightning strikes and add that ‘some short term loss of power and other services is likely’.

Delays to train services are possible and there is a small chance that a few properties could become flooded, it concludes.

Scattered heavy showers, some with thunder, are expected to develop later this morning and into the afternoon, before easing this evening. In the most active storms, hail, strong gusty winds, and lightning may be impactful. There is also a chance that a few spots could see frequent, heavy bursts of rain, leading to surface water flooding.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly,” says a spokesperson. “When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
