Three crews called to Milton Keynes battery fire

Firefighters attend to lithium-ion battery blaze in workshop.

Three firefighting crews were called yesterday to a workshop fire involving a lithium-ion battery.

The crews, from Buckinghamshire Fire Service’s Broughton, West Ashland and Newport Pagnell stations, tackled a single battery on fire in the Northfield Drive workshop.

An industrial fire blanket was used by works staff to suppress the fire and when firefighters arrived they used four breathing apparatus sets, an extended hose reel jet, a main jet, a fire blanket, a thermal imaging camera, two ventilation fans plus other equipment.

The battery was removed by firefighters from the workshop to safety and placed into a submersion tank.

One man received burns to his hands and was passed into the care of South Central Ambulance Service.  A fire investigation officer was also in attendance, said Bucks Fire and Rescue Service.

Lithium-ion batteries are used in many domestic appliances and are popular for their light weight and capability to be recharged. They are also found in electric vehicles including cars, scooters and bikes.
