The Winter Half Marathon will see thousands of runners take to the new city streets on Sunday, in one of Milton Keynes’ key athletic events.
In a groundbreaking first for the UK, the event will also see the debut of the nation’s first Emergency E-Bike Ambulance Fleet.
The impressive e-bikes are operated by Acute Ambulance & Medical Services (A.A.M.S) – which has its headquarters here in Milton Keynes.
This pioneering initiative marks a major innovation in marathon medical safety, response times, and eco-friendly emergency care.
Designed to navigate crowded environments at high speed while carrying medical-grade equipment, the E-Bike Ambulances will offer significantly faster response times during events where traditional vehicles may face delays. It means medics will have the ability to reach runners experiencing exhaustion, dehydration, injuries, or medical episodes in a matter of seconds.
Traditional motorcycle response units are common at events, but, e-bike ambulances have never been deployed in an official medical capacity anywhere in the world.
This breakthrough marks a major evolution in rapid-response medical care — faster access in crowded events, zero emissions, and silent operation that enhances safety, comfort, and environmental responsibility.
Each E-Bike Ambulance is equipped with a full first-aid and trauma kit, a defibrillator (AED), airway management tools, bleeding control kits, communication radios and high-visibility safety lighting.
“This is more than innovation — it’s leadership,” said A.A.M.S director Kieren Gibson, “We are redefining what responsive, clean and safe event medical support looks like.
“Runners’ safety is our top priority,” he added, “Events like the MK Winter Half Marathon require rapid, flexible emergency response, and these bikes allow our team to reach patients faster, more safely, and more sustainably than ever before.”
A.A.M.S will provide comprehensive medical cover on-site, supported by their traditional ambulance units, rapid response teams, and the new E-Bike Ambulance division.
