The Queen has promoted Tom from a Captain to a Colonel for his outstanding fundraising efforts, and he's become an honorary cricket player - all on his 100th birthday.

The national hero, from Marston Moretaine, has this morning (30/4) raised over £30 million pounds for the NHS.

It all started a few weeks ago when the WW2 veteran set himself a challenge to walk 100 lengths of his 25-metre long garden before his 100th birthday.

MKFM was the first media organisation to back the campaign, and when our breakfast presenter Michael Blades spoke to Tom, he had raised nearly £8,000. Just a mere few days later, national media had picked it up and people from across the world had donated over £1 million.

Throughout April, the money did not stop rolling in, and Tom soon became a household name. He was presented with a special Pride of Britain Award, and thousands of people from up and down the country wrote him cards sending their best wishes.

Michael Ball teamed up with Tom to release a duet of You'll Never Walk Alone which landed the number one spot. And, Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, even gave Tom a special shot out on his first broadcast to the nation following his battle with coronavirus.

That all feels like a distant memory, as today (30/4), Tom celebrates turning 100-years-old. At 8:20 am, he was honoured with a special RAF flypast and was seen live on TV punching the air with joy.

The Queen also promoted the WW2 veteran to Honorary Colonel, and former England Captain Michael Vaughan made Tom an honorary cricket player.

Colonel Tom, who served in the Yorkshire Regiment, received a video of the regiment's band singing happy birthday. And, he was sent a special birthday message from Boris Johnson who said his "heroic efforts have lifted the spirits of the entire nation".

"Reaching 100 is quite something. Reaching 100 with such interest in me and huge generosity from the public is very overwhelming," Colonel Tom said.

"People keep saying what I have done is remarkable, however it's actually what you have done for me which is remarkable.

"Please always remember, tomorrow will be a good day."
