Thames Valley Police area revealed as fifth worst area for pick-pocketing offences in the UK

New research has revealed that the Thames Valley Police area is the fifth worst in the UK for pick-pocketing offences.

The study, undertaken by insurance company ProtectYourBubble, has revealed that there were an average of 70 'thefts from a person' per 100,000 people in our policing area between 2013 and 2017.

Only the Metropolitan Police (222), Lincolnshire Police (140), Greater Manchester Police (104) and West Yorkshire Police (91) reported worse figures.

Meanwhile, the areas of the UK deemed the safest from pickpockets included Dyfed Powys, North Wales, Surrey, Gwent Police as well as Devon and Cornwall Police.

Dyfed Powys had as low as an average of 6 'thefts from a person' per 100,000 people in the policing area.

In total in the Thames Valley area, there were 16,832 pick-pocketing incidents between 2013 and 2017.

ProtectYourBubble Director James Brown, said: "While it is not exactly a surprise to see the sprawling metropolises of London and Manchester topping the list, it is interesting to see areas like Lincolnshire being ranked so high."

"For the force to have recorded so many of these thefts, but have such a comparatively low population, suggests there are pickpockets aplenty operating in this area."

“Residents in this force area should take extra care when walking around with valuable, uninsured belongings, especially phones, tablets, laptops and jewellery.”
