Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner calls for pay rise for officers across the region

The recently elected Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Barber, has taken to social media to call for a pay raise for all police officers across the region.

This news comes after the government announced that NHS workers will receive a 3% pay rise for their work fighting the pandemic over the last year.

For the average nurse, this will mean an additional £1,000 a year, while many porters and cleaners will receive around £540.

Calling for consistency across public sector pay, the Police and Crime Commissioner posted: "Staff across the NHS have done an amazing job during the pandemic, but consistency matters in public sector pay.

"Police officers in Thames Valley Police and across the country deserve a pay rise. It is only affordable for one sector if it is affordable for all.

"The state of public finances will admittedly dictate only a limited rise but a freeze is impossible to justify when others are seeing increases.

"This needs a rethink and it needs to be funded centrally to avoid unsustainable pressure on local policing budgets."
