Carers Week takes place from 9 to 15 June, raising awareness of the vital contribution that unpaid carers make.
Milton Keynes City Council is encouraging residents who provide unpaid care to get in touch, as many don’t realise that they are entitled to extra support.
Unpaid carers provide regular care for a friend or family member who cannot cope without their help — often because of illness, disability, a mental health problem, or addiction. The City Council estimates there could be 21,000 unpaid carers living in Milton Keynes.
The City Council’s new Carers Support Service is there to make life easier for them. The service brings together a wide range of help and advice, whether that’s face-to-face, over the phone, or online. Carers can find guidance on benefits, making emergency care plans, housing options, and opportunities to connect with others in similar situations.
The City Council also provides a minimum direct payment of £240 for unpaid carers (subject to assessment), with further support available depending on individual needs.
For carers looking to balance earning an income with providing care, or for those with space and time to offer, the City Council also offers a Shared Lives scheme. This is an opportunity to support another adult who needs help to live independently, in a welcoming home environment.
Shared Lives carers are paid and fully supported, with flexible options that can fit around existing commitments and caring responsibilities. It’s a rewarding way to make a difference while using skills many carers already have.
