Supermarket giant Sainsbury's to make job cuts and reduce Milton Keynes office space

The supermarket giant Sainsbury's, which has a major office in Milton Keynes, is set to make job cuts and reduce office space.

Sainsbury's has said it will cut 500 head office jobs across the country whilst moving out of office space as more staff shift to remote working.

Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury's, has its head office along Avebury Boulevard in Central Milton Keynes.

It has been announced that the chain will move out of two floors in the Milton Keynes-based building, with the remaining office space being "adapted to create more collaborative workspaces".

The UK's second-largest supermarket will also close offices in Coventry and Victoria in London, whilst moving out of two floors at its main office in Holborn in London, and another floor at its Manchester-based office.

Other parts of the newly unveiled plan involve a major shake-up of warehouse roles. Sainsbury's says they expect to close down its online fulfilment centre in Bromley-by-Bow, East London - which puts 650 staff into consultation.

The supermarket hopes it can redeploy most of these affected staff to nearby stores in London to assist with picking and packing online orders, something which the chain thinks will expand over the coming years.

Simon Roberts, CEO of Sainsbury’s, said: “Our new plan puts food first and will create a simpler, nimbler and more efficient business. The money we save will enable us to invest in what customers really care about – lower prices, exciting new products and the most convenient ways for them to shop.

“It is vital that we adapt. I understand this will be a very difficult time for affected colleagues and we will do everything we can to fully support them.”
