Sources claim Milton Keynes is the secret back-up location for an 'evacuation' of Parliament

A Westminster source has told a national Sunday newspaper that Milton Keynes is the back-up location for the House of Commons and House of Lords, if there were to be an evacuation of Westminster.

A source told a national newspaper this weekend: "They would have to move up the M1 to the new town if an emergency temporarily put the Palace of Westminster and surrounding buildings out of action."

Another Westminster source added: "MPs and peers need a location now where we can carry on the business of Parliament if an emergency means we can’t use Westminster or any of the places around it."

It would mean all members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords moving to Milton Keynes temporarily, with no details on exactly where in our city the temporary location for either would be.

Despite a lack of official confirmation for the plans, the MP for Milton Keynes North Mark Lancaster said: "Everybody at Westminster would get to know what a wonderful place [Milton Keynes] is."

A spokesman for Parliament said it had ‘business resilience plans’ but for reasons of security it would not comment on them.
