City council asking for residents’ views on anti-social driving.
Milton Keynes residents and business leaders are being asked for their views on proposed extensions to action being taken against dangerous and anti-social car cruising.
MK City Council is asking locals to share their thoughts on its proposals to extend the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that it first introduced in 2022 regarding car cruising.
It allows the police and authorised officers to act against vehicle-related anti-social behaviour, including street racing, reckless driving and public nuisance. The current PSPO is due to expire in January next year and the city council is proposing a three-year extension, so it can continue to take a strong stance against the issue.
Since the PSPO was introduced, more than 400 instances of dangerous or disruptive driving have been addressed through enforcement action in partnership with Thames Valley Police.
Efforts have been stepped up recently with more police patrols, arrests and vehicle-related fines being issued, following reports of noise and nuisance complaints. Specialised CCTV cameras are now in place across the city to monitor activity.
“We know that most car enthusiasts are responsible, but there is a clear line between enjoying a hobby and putting others in danger,” said Cllr Mick Legg, Cabinet Member responsible for Community Safety.
“The safety of our residents comes first, and we’ll continue to take tough action against anyone who puts lives at risk. This consultation is an opportunity for people to tell us what’s working well in curbing these activities and how we can make further improvements.”
More information and details on how to respond are available on the city council website. The consultation is open until 27th October.
