Support service changing lives in Milton Keynes.
This year's Shared Lives Week (23rd–27th June), we’re shining a light on an incredible service here in Milton Keynes that’s quietly changing lives every day.
Shared Lives MK is like fostering, but for adults who need extra support to live independently. The service matches adults with additional needs to local people who welcome them into their home and support them like family. That could be for a few hours, a week, short breaks, or even full-time live-in care – whatever works best for everyone.
Shared Lives MK supports adults aged 18 and over who may be facing challenges such as learning disabilities, mental health issues, early-stage dementia, or loneliness. It’s a warm and personalised alternative to traditional care settings like day centres, residential care or supported living arrangements – and it works.
It’s a win-win: carers get flexible working, generous tax breaks, and can earn up to £703.92 a week per person they support. Adults receiving care get the stability, companionship and independence that comes from living in a real home.
With 45 carers already involved, Milton Keynes City Council is looking for more people to step forward. As a bonus, full-time carers can now get 100% of their council tax paid.
