Schools in Milton Keynes will reopen in two weeks as key part of Prime Minister's route out of lockdown

The Prime Minister is set to announce that all schools will be reopening in just two weeks' time.

Primary and secondary schools will reopen to all pupils on Monday 8th March, under the Prime Minister's phased roadmap out of lockdown.

It is not known whether there will be a phased reopening, similar to how year groups returned to school after the Christmas holiday, or whether schools will be required to carry out testing.

But Boris Johnson is expected to provide more information when he outlines his plan today. He will speak to the House of Commons this afternoon, before leading a Downing Street news conference at 7pm.

Many people, including teaching unions, school staff, believe that schools should not reopen until those working within schools have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Cllr Pete Marland, Leader of Milton Keynes Council, is amongst those who believe school staff should be higher up the priority list.

Last month, in an MKFM interview, he said: "I don't think the council will be able to recommend to schools, because it's ultimately their decision, that they should reopen unless staff have access to a vaccine.

"Just common sense would tell you it is not particularly fair to put people, who are working, into an environment where they may be at risk without full knowledge of what that risk is. Either the Government should make the vaccine available to teachers before schools reopen, or they have to show the evidence that schools are safe [and] to provide that reassurance to parents and staff."

So far, teachers have not been moved up the priority list, with scientists suggesting that this move could cause more deaths.

But it has since been reported that teachers, and also police staff, will be vaccinated after the over 50s age group - meaning they could have the jab by Spring this year.

The Government has also announced that every person over the age of 18 will be offered a COVID-19 vaccination by the end of July.

Boris Johnson said: "We will now aim to offer a jab to every adult by the end of July, helping us protect the most vulnerable sooner, and take further steps to ease some of the restrictions in place.

“But there should be no doubt: the route out of lockdown will be cautious and phased, as we all continue to protect ourselves and those around us.”
