Rolo the Dachshund hailed 'local hero' after sniffing out kittens dumped in carrier bag in Milton Keynes

A clever dog is being praised for saving SEVEN kittens after they were found dumped in a carrier bag.

Rolo the dachshund is being hailed a local hero after discovering seven abandoned kittens in Milton Keynes yesterday morning (22/8).

On Tuesday morning, Rolo was out on a walk with his owners James and Megan, when his nose alerted him to a carrier bag in the Brooklands area.

After investigating the carrier bag, James and Megan were shocked to find seven kittens dumped, on bin day.

Rolo's owners saved 6 of the kittens while one of them managed to escape.

Thankfully, Rolo came to the rescue once again and managed to sniff out the missing kitten who has now been rescued.

"On Rolo’s morning walk he found a spot under a wooden structure that he became obsessed with and wouldn’t leave it, just kept sniffing all over and once he got a little bit closer a tiny kitten shot out, at this point I just thought it was one kitten so I took the dogs back home and went back to try and help the kitten," Rolo's owner, James, told MKFM.

"I noticed another black kitten that ran away and a box that was double bagged, at this point I knew what had happened so I opened the box to find another 5 kittens, me and my partner took the 6 kittens to the vets and then posted on Facebook that there was a 7th kitten on the loose and to our amazement, a group of locals and the RSPCA all got together in a search.

"Unfortunately they didn’t have any luck. At around 1pm I took Rolo for his afternoon walk and thought it might be good to take him back to the same spot and have a look for the missing kitten!

"I couldn’t believe it but in the same spot as the morning, it had taken itself back to where it was dumped, I tried to grab it but it clawed me and run away under a car, we then lost sight completely and it wasn’t until I took Rolo over to the car that he then ran under the car and sniffed out the cat hidden on the rear axle, my partner then took this cat to the vets to be with the others."

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: "Rolo the Dachshund came to the rescue for the second time, sniffing out the kittens that were dumped. A huge thank you to James and Megan, Rolo’s owners, who managed to secure the kittens and transported them safely to the vets.

"To all the residents of Brooklands and everyone who came to help, including our RSPCA Animal Coordinator and volunteers, thank you.

"All kittens are doing well and we have a space waiting for them here at RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks branch as soon as they can be discharged from vets."
