Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen qualified P3 while teammate Yuki Tsunoda was knocked out in Q2 ahead of tomorrow's Dutch Grand Prix.
In Q1, Verstappen's initial run put him 0.285 seconds behind McLaren's Lando Norris, 0.127 behind Oscar Piastri, good enough for P3.
Tsunoda, meanwhile, had work to do as his initial lap saw him P19 with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll damaging his car to the point where he could not return to the session.
The Japanese driver improved by a few tenths on his second run, but it was only good for P17.
While Verstappen eventually bailed on his final run in Q1, sitting P4 and comfortably out of danger, Tsunoda continued to push hard and managed to cross the line P12 - putting himself just two tenths down on his teammate and through to Q2.
In Q2, Verstappen's initial run once again saw him in P3 and just 0.248 seconds back from Norris in P1. Tsunoda's initial run was fairly positive, seeing him P8, but only 0.035 seconds above the elimination zone.
Tsunoda was unable to improve his time during his second run, seeing him drop down to P12 and knocked out of Q2. Verstappen, meanwhile, progressed comfortably into Q3 without the need to improve on his initial run.
In a familiar pattern, Verstappen's first timed lap in Q3 also saw him sit P3 behind the two McLarens - this time 0.386 seconds behind pole position.
The four-time World Champion improved on his final run but only by a tenth, securing himself a place on the second row, with sister team Racing Bull's Isack Hadjar lining up alongside him in P4.
The starting position gives Verstappen hope of clinching a podium for the first time since his P2 finish in the Canadian Grand Prix.
Speaking after qualifying, Verstappen commented: "This weekend so far has been quite tricky for us, but qualifying was the best I've felt all weekend."
"That's exactly what you want, and to be P3 here, I'm very happy with that."
He continued: "The energy of the crowd, the whole weekend, has been amazing. To see so much orange on the grandstand is always very special."
"Let's see what we can do. The McLarens have been very fast all weekend, so it's also important to just focus on our own race, see what we can do."
He concluded: "But this has been a good step forward. I hope that we can keep that up, also going into the race tomorrow."
